Getting started

How do you use the white screen?

A plain white screen takes three steps:

  1. Pick a light from the cards if you have a job in mind, such as Tracing or Video call light. Not sure? Skip this step.

  2. Press Start white screen. The white fills your whole screen at once.

  3. Press Esc when you are done.

Keyboard and touch controls

  • ← →In full screen, ← and → change the shade, and ↑ and ↓ change the brightness in steps of 5 %. The controls hide when you stop moving, so nothing sits on top of the white.
  • LockOn a phone, tap Lock in the bar and stray taps will change nothing; press and hold the screen to unlock it.

Your settings are remembered

The page also remembers you. When you come back, it opens with your last setup and says "Restored your last setup". Press Reset to default any time to start fresh.

Six ready-made lights

What can you use a white screen for? Six setups

A white screen is used as a light, a plain backdrop and a quick display check. People use a white screen for light to trace a drawing, light a video call, read, do makeup or find things in the dark. On a new or dirty screen, white also shows fingerprints, tint and dark dots.

The six setups handle the light jobs in one tap. A switch above the cards, Lights for: Computer / Phone or tablet, shows only the setups that fit your device. The switch picks the right set for you, and one click shows the other set. No card is lit when the page opens, so nothing changes until you choose, and a line under the cards then tells you in plain words what you get.

Each card has a ? tip that explains it, and a card shows Changed once you edit one of its settings. Under the cards, three shortcuts cover other common jobs: Download an image, Use a second monitor and Clean my screen.

Tracing

Computer, phone, tablet

Best for: drawing over paper

Tracing with a white screen

Tracing turns a tablet or laptop into a simple light box. Lay your paper over the screen and tape the corners so the sheet does not slide. The cool, even white shines through the paper and shows every line of the drawing underneath, and the screen stays on while you work. On a phone or tablet, taps are locked, so the pencil changes nothing. A tablet laid flat gives you the biggest surface for sketches, calligraphy practice or stencils, and if the lines look faint, raise the brightness before you start.

Video call light

Computer, phone, tablet

Best for: lighting your face on camera

Video call light: where should the screen go?

Video call light turns a screen into a soft front light for Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams calls and online classes. Put the screen next to your camera, a little in front of your face, so the light falls on you instead of behind you. The setup uses a soft warm white at 5000 K and 90 % brightness and keeps the screen on for the whole call. A second monitor or a tablet works best, because your main screen stays free for the call. If your face still looks dark, move the light closer.

The same soft light works for makeup or a selfie. Photographers also use a tablet this way as a small fill light for close-up shots.

Soft warm white at 90%. The screen stays on.

Flashlight

Phone or tablet

Best for: a light in your hand or pocket

Flashlight on a phone

Flashlight shows only on phones and tablets. It turns the screen bright white, keeps it on and locks taps, so the light won't change in your hand or pocket. The light is soft and wide, which suits finding keys on the floor, reading a label or looking inside a bag. Press and hold the screen to unlock it when you are done.

Night light · Warm light

Computer, phone, tablet

Best for: a soft glow in a dark room, or light that is easier on your eyes

Night light and Warm light

Night light gives a soft amber glow at 2700 K and 30 % brightness, and the screen stays on. Night light is a gentle lamp for a dark bedroom or a hallway at night, bright enough to see by without filling the room. Warm light is a step brighter: a yellow-white at 4000 K and 80 % for evening reading or desk work, when pure white feels harsh.

Brightness

How bright can a white screen get?

Bright white shows pure white (#FFFFFF) at 100 % brightness, the brightest white your screen can show at its current setting. A bright white screen gets its last boost from the device itself. A web page sets the color of every pixel, and your device decides how much light those pixels give. Screen brightness is measured in nits (candelas per square meter): most desktop monitors give about 200 to 300 nits, and HDR screens can reach 400 to 2,500.

The light around you counts too: in daylight or a bright room the same white looks dimmer than it does at night. When the white looks dim, the next step is the device's own brightness.

Pure white at 100%. Turn your screen brightness up too.

  • 400 to 2,500 nits

How to make it brighter, the guide under the tool, walks you through it for each device:

DeviceTurn brightness upTurn these off

WindowsWindows + A, then move the slider to the rightNight light, automatic and content-adaptive brightness
iPhone and iPadControl Center, slider to the topNight Shift and True Tone (hold the slider), Auto-Brightness
AndroidSwipe down twice, then move the slider to fullEye comfort or Night light, Adaptive brightness, Battery saver

Night Shift, True Tone and Night light also tint white towards yellow. Turning them off gives you a super bright white screen that is pure white as well.

Warmth and shades

Which white do you need? Warmth and shades

A pure white screen is the right choice for checking a display, but a warmer white is kinder for light and a cooler one is crisper for drawing. Warmth is measured in Kelvin (K): a lower number looks warmer and more yellow, a higher number looks cooler and more blue. The Light tab offers four warmth settings:

WarmthKelvinHow it looksGood for
Warm4000 KYellow-whiteEvening light, reading
Soft5000 KGentle warm whiteVideo calls
Neutral6500 KPure whiteDisplay checks, the brightest light
Cool8000 KBlue-whiteTracing, crisp lines

Neutral matches D65, the 6500 K daylight white that TVs and the sRGB color standard use. The Warmer and Cooler buttons go further, anywhere from 2700 K to 9000 K, so a warm white screen can be as soft as candle-colored amber.

The Shade row has 10 named whites, from Pure white and Snow to Paper, Ivory, Cream and Antique white, each with its color code. Custom lets you choose any color you like, and its picker can grab a color from anywhere on your screen. Copy this color code copies the hex, so the same white goes straight into a design or a slide.

Cleaning

Clean your screen with a white screen

Clean my screen starts the white screen right away. Fingerprints, smudges and cleaning streaks are easy to see on white, so you can spot every mark you missed. Dust is easier to see on a black screen, so a quick look at both catches nearly everything.

Look for marks, then press Esc to come back.

Before you wipe

Apple's cleaning guide, for example, says to turn the device off and unplug it first, then wipe the screen with a soft, lint-free cloth. Never spray a cleaner straight onto the screen; dampen the cloth instead, as the same guide advises. Turn the screen back on, open the white in full screen so no menu bar hides the edges, and check again.

Display checks

White screen test: what white shows about your display

A white screen test is the quickest way to look over a new monitor, laptop, phone or TV. With the whole screen one color, three things stand out, and each takes only a minute to check.

Tint

Tint comes first. White should look white, not yellow, blue or pink. A yellow tint usually comes from Night Shift, Night light, Eye comfort or a warm picture mode, so turn those off before you judge the screen. If the tint stays, look at the color or picture settings of the monitor itself.

Dark dots

Dark dots come next. A tiny dot that stays dark on white, even after you wipe the screen, may be a dead pixel. Move your eyes slowly across the screen, one area at a time, and wipe first so a speck of dust does not fool you. A broken red, green or blue part can hide on white, so check a red screen, a green screen and a blue screen too.

  • A dark dot on white

Uneven light

Uneven light is the last check. Look for patches, corners or edges that look dimmer or slightly colored next to the rest. Start with Bright white at 100 %, then step the brightness down with ↓ and look again, so you see the screen at the levels you really use. A dim room makes small differences much easier to spot.

Two tools under Lines and split make the white screen test sharper. Lines lays a Thin, Medium or Wide grid over the white, so you can find a spot again or tell someone exactly where it is. The same grid helps you line up a drawing. Split turns half the screen black, side by side or top and bottom, so you can compare how the display handles white and black at the same time. Neither is saved in a download.

Grid lines over the white screen
Lines help you find the same spot again.

Backlight bleed and glow show on black, not white, so finish with a black screen in a dark room. For a full check with more colors, a dead pixel test goes further.

Screens and sharing

Use a second monitor, a phone or a shared link

Second monitor

  • Choose a monitor fills your other screen with white while you keep working on this one. You can reach it from Use a second monitor under the cards or from the Second monitor settings.
  • You can also Open a new window, drag it to the other monitor and press F11 to fill it; F11 again leaves full screen.

A white second monitor makes a soft desk light or a plain backdrop behind you.

Fills your other screen with white.

Send to phone

Send to phone shows a QR code. Scan it with your phone camera and the white screen opens on your phone with the same light: warmth, shade and size. That means you can set up a light on your computer and carry it to a tablet for tracing.

Share setup

Share setup copies a link that opens the page with your warmth, shade and brightness. Paste it in a chat, and a friend or a classmate opens the page with the same settings.

Timer and effects

Timer, Keep screen on and flash

Timer and screen on

Turn off after closes the white screen by itself after 1, 5, 15 or 30 minutes, or after 1, 2, 4 or 8 hours. A Night light can then switch off once you fall asleep. Keep screen on stops your device from going to sleep while the white screen is open, which matters during a long tracing session or a long call.

Flash and pulse

Flash and pulse changes how the light behaves. Steady is the normal light, Pulse makes it rise and fall, and Flash blinks it 1, 2 or 3 times a second, never more. Three flashes a second is the limit the W3C accessibility guidelines set for flashing content.

Flash asks first, because flashing light can cause seizures in some people with photosensitive epilepsy, and it starts only after you press I understand, use Flash. Flash runs only in full screen, and Esc stops it at once. A flash or pulse can help you signal someone across a dark room or find your phone in the dark.

Eyes and power

Is a white screen bad for your eyes or battery?

Light at night

A bright white screen can feel harsh in a dark room, and bright light late in the evening can make it harder to fall asleep. Harvard Health explains that light of any kind can hold back melatonin, the hormone that helps you sleep, and blue light does this most strongly. Harvard Health suggests avoiding bright screens two to three hours before bed. Night comfort is built for this: switch on Softer after 9 pm (until 6 am): warm and 40% and the white turns warmer and dimmer by itself. For a fully dark room, a black screen is the darker choice.

Open the black screen

Pure black for a fully dark room.

Battery

  • 39 to 47 %

Battery saved by a dark screen on OLED phones, at full brightness

Battery use depends most on brightness. A Purdue University study of OLED phones found that dark screens saved 39 to 47 % of battery power at full brightness. At 30 to 50 % brightness, the saving was only 3 to 9 %. For a long session on a phone, a lower brightness keeps the white screen running longer.

Troubleshooting

What is the "white screen of death"?

The white screen of death is a different problem: a phone, computer, app or website stuck on a blank white screen when it should be working. An iPhone white screen after an update and a WordPress white screen after a new plugin are two common cases. On a Windows PC, Microsoft suggests pressing Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B first, which resets the graphics driver. On any device, a good next check is to restart it, then undo the last change you made, such as an update, a plugin or a browser extension. The white screen tool here makes white on purpose; it does not fix a stuck screen.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the white screen free, and do I need an account?

Yes, the white screen is free, and there is no account, no sign-up and nothing to install. The whole tool runs in your web browser on a computer, phone or tablet. You can open a white screen online in a second and close the tab when you are done. Nothing is saved to your device unless you choose Download, and your settings stay in your own browser. Bookmark the page and your white screen is one click away next time.

Can I put a white screen on a TV or projector?

Yes, when the TV or projector is connected to your computer as a second display. Once it is connected, Choose a monitor sends the white straight to it while you keep working on your laptop. You can also Open a new window, drag it onto the TV or projector and press F11. A projector turned white gives a plain, bright backdrop for a classroom or a meeting room, and the same steps work for a TV used as a big second screen.

What is the difference between a white screen and a white image?

A white screen is live: you can change the brightness, warmth and shade while it runs, lock taps, set a timer and keep the screen awake. A white image is a file. It stays the same, but you can set it as a wallpaper, drop it into slides or a design, or send it to someone. Use the live white screen when you need light or a test, and the Download tab when you need a white picture to keep. Both keep the same warmth and shade.

What is the color code for pure white?

Pure white is #FFFFFF in hex, which is 255 red, 255 green and 255 blue: every color at full strength. That is the white Bright white uses. The other nine named shades sit just below it. Snow is #FFFAFA, Ivory is #FFFFF0 and Antique white is #FAEBD7, which is why they look softer. Every shade in the tool shows its code, and Copy this color code copies it for you in one click.

Why does the same white look different on my phone and my laptop?

Every screen gives off a different amount of light and starts from its own color settings. A phone may run Night Shift or Eye comfort while the laptop does not, and one panel may be tuned warmer than another from the factory. Brightness changes the look too, since a dim white can read as light gray. To match two screens, turn off the warm night settings on both and set the same brightness. Then open the white screen with Share setup or Send to phone, so both use the same warmth and shade.
