Overview

Get a free blue screen in one click

The blue screen on Black Screen Online is a free tool that fills your whole screen with blue, with no sign-up. Press Start blue screen to open Pure blue (#0000FF) in full screen. People looking for light blue sometimes get a deep, hard-to-use color instead, so I made Light blue and Dark blue separate setups. Blue or green? helps when clothing blends into a video backdrop. Getting started

How do you use the blue screen?

Open a blank blue screen in three steps. Pure blue is the starting shade, but you can choose another.

  1. Under Pick a setup, choose Light blue, Dark blue or another option. Skip this for pure blue.

  2. Press Start blue screen. The color fills the display in full screen.

  3. Press Esc or select Exit to return to the page.

Five ready-made setups

What can you use a blue screen for? Five setups

A blue screen works as a plain blue background, a soft blue light, a backdrop for a small video shot and a check for broken dots. I chose five setups for these jobs, so you can find the right blue without changing several controls. Setups for: Computer / Phone or tablet shows the cards for your device, and you can switch views if needed. Every card has a ? tip, and an edited card shows Changed.

Blue screen

Computer, phone, tablet

Best for: a background or a blue light

Blue screen: a plain background and a blue light

Choose Blue screen for a solid color behind a small object, a simple signal, or a quick display check. It also makes a cheap blue light. Set a laptop or TV behind a photo subject, or fill a room with a cool glow for a party, then lower Brightness if it is too strong. For a flashing police-light look in a home video, open Flash and pulse and pick Flash. On a projector, it turns a white wall into a blue backdrop. Press Esc when you are done.

Light blue

Computer, phone, tablet

Best for: a soft, pale background

Light blue screen: a soft, pale background

Choose Light blue for a light blue screen when pure blue looks too dark for a slide, phone wallpaper, or close-up photo. If the pale color seems too bright, lower Brightness in the Light tab. Sky blue is another choice, close to baby blue. Compare the two in your room rather than guessing from the names. Want plain, bright light with no color at all? Use the white screen instead.

Dark blue

Computer, phone, tablet

Best for: a dim room

Dark blue screen: a deep, dimmer blue

Dark blue gives you a dark blue screen, close to navy. It stays visible in a dim room and lights up the room far less than pure blue. Tool brightness goes down to 5%, but your device sets how much light the screen produces.

Six blues

Which blue screen color code should you choose?

Pure blue is #0000FF, or RGB (0, 0, 255). There is no single "blue screen color": other shades use different values. Light blue includes more red and green, so it looks paler.

Under Open settings → Light, choose from six blues:

  • Pure blue

    #0000FF

RGB 0, 0, 255 · A solid blue field and blue pixel checks

  • Light blue

    #ADD8E6

    RGB 173, 216, 230 · Pale backgrounds

  • Sky blue

    #87CEEB

RGB 135, 206, 235 · A brighter, airy blue, close to baby blue

  • Royal blue

    #4169E1

    RGB 65, 105, 225 · A medium blue with more visible light

  • Chroma blue

    #0047BB

    RGB 0, 71, 187 · Removing a blue backdrop from footage

  • Dark blue

    #00008B

RGB 0, 0, 139 · Deep blue and dim displays

For navy blue, enter #000080 under Custom. Use Copy this color code when you need the shade in a design or slide. The same code can look a little different from one screen to the next, so check it on the screen you will use. The tool calls #0047BB Chroma blue. It is our backdrop choice, not a required color for all studios.

Why it looks dark

Why does pure blue look darker than light blue?

Pure blue can look dark at 100% tool brightness. Human eyes respond more strongly to green than blue, so adding some green makes a shade look brighter.

  • 72%

Green's share of how bright a color looks

  • 21%

    Red's share

  • 7%

    Blue's share

The W3C relative luminance formula uses 0.2126 for red, 0.7152 for green, and 0.0722 for blue after the colors are converted to linear light. These figures describe an sRGB calculation. They are not brightness measurements of your monitor. Dark-looking pure blue is normal.

If pure blue looks too dark, try Light blue, Sky blue, or Royal blue first. I included these shades because changing brightness alone does not turn pure blue into pale blue. The device brightness control affects light output, not the missing red and green color values.

Blue or green

Blue screen vs. green screen: which is better for filming?

Green often works better for well-lit digital video. Blue may work better if the subject wears green, has blonde hair, or the scene is dark. Chroma key removes a selected background color so another image can show through.

What the experts say

Adobe's blue-versus-green guidance explains that green is popular with digital cameras and suits daytime scenes, while blue can suit darker scenes and certain costumes. Blue came first: film cameras handled it well, and green took over with digital cameras, because most camera sensors have twice as many green dots as red or blue. Neither color guarantees clean edges. Blue may also need more light to record clearly, and hair, glass and shiny objects can reflect either background, so a short test clip matters.

Test first

If green clothing disappears in an edited clip, try a blue backdrop instead of increasing the removal strength. Check a short recording first. A little testing can save you from repeating the whole scene. For a quick answer, open Blue or green? under Also useful.

Chroma key

How do you use a blue screen for chroma key?

Set it up

Select Chroma key blue to show #0047BB behind a small subject. Position the display behind a hand, toy or close-up face, then film with another camera. Make sure the blue fills the area you plan to replace. A phone is usually too small for a full-body shot.

Light and test

Light the subject separately and check blue reflections. Test a short recording, then sample its blue in your editor. Set up a color backdrop opens the step-by-step guide on the Green Screen page. It shows where to put the screen and how to remove the color in your video app. Those steps work with blue as well, so you do not have to learn a different process.

Pixel check

Check blue pixels on your display

Check blue pixels fills the display with pure blue and thin guide lines. On pure blue, only the blue part of each dot lights up, so a broken one shows as a dark dot that would hide on a white screen. The lines help you find that spot again.

  • A broken dot on blue

First, wipe off any dust, since a speck can look like a dark dot. Then compare the same area on a red screen and a green screen, because each color lights a different part of the dot.

Night

Is a blue screen a good light to use at night?

Dark blue may look dimmer than light blue, but it still gives off light. In the evening, blue light can keep you awake more than other colors. Harvard Health reports that in one study, blue light held back melatonin, the sleep hormone, about twice as long as green light. It also suggests dim red lights at night. The National Institutes of Health also notes that light from devices at night can confuse the body clock.

For a dim light at night, try the red screen instead. For less glow, open a black screen or lower your device brightness, and keep any display as dark as the task allows.

Blue screen video

Pure blue and Light blue also offer Download as a video. This opens Black Screen Video with the shade already selected, ready to save as a video file. You do not need a 10-hour blue screen video either: the live blue stays on as long as you like with Keep screen on.

Screens, timer, flash

Second monitor, sharing, timer and effects

Second monitor

If your main display holds filming notes, keep the blue on another screen. Choose Use a second monitor, then Choose a monitor where supported. Otherwise, select Open a new window, move it to the other display, and press F11.

Share and phone

Share setup copies a link with your choices. Send to phone displays a QR code; scan it to load the same shade, size and brightness on a phone. This saves you from selecting the color a second time on another device.

Timer and screen on

For timed sessions, choose Turn off after under Timer and effects. Leave it Off, or pick a short limit of one, five, 15 or 30 minutes. Longer limits are one, two, four or eight hours. Keep screen on stops the screen from going to sleep while the blue screen is open.

Lines, split and flash

Lines and split adds Thin, Medium or Wide guide lines, or shows half the screen black beside or above blue. These marks are not included in downloaded files. Flash and pulse offers Steady, Pulse, and Flash at 1, 2 or 3 flashes a second. Flash requires confirmation and runs only in full screen. It can affect people sensitive to flashing lights, so choose Steady when flashing is not needed.

The W3C flashing guidelines describe accessibility thresholds, not a promise of safety. Press Esc to stop.

No signal

Why does a TV or VHS player show a blue screen with no signal?

Many TVs and VCRs (VHS players) show plain blue when no picture signal arrives. A feature often called Blue Back replaced snowy static with a plain blue display, which made the missing signal clear without the moving noise.

  • Blue Back

What TV makers called the blue no-signal screen

A Japanese TV patent describes it plainly. When a channel has no signal, TVs and video recorders show a full blue picture, so the screen does not fill with noise. A menu switches the feature on or off.

If your TV turns blue today, check the cable and the Input or Source button first: a blue screen usually means that input has no picture.

Troubleshooting

What is the blue screen of death, and what should you do?

What it is

The blue screen of death is a Windows stop error, not a blank color backdrop. Windows shows it after a serious fault, often with a stop code such as MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, and then restarts. Microsoft's stop-code support page calls it a Blue Screen or Black Screen error, because newer Windows 11 versions can show it on black.

What to do first

In most cases, the restart fixes it and nothing more is needed. If the same stop code keeps coming back, write it down or take a photo of it. Microsoft's first steps are to remove any new hardware, update the drivers and Windows, and start the PC in safe mode. Its page lists every step in order.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I show a full blue screen on a TV or projector?

Yes, if your TV or projector has a compatible browser, or if it is connected to a computer that opens the tool. A connected display may also work with Choose a monitor or Open a new window, depending on browser support. Keep the blue in full screen so no menus show. A projector also changes how blue looks on different walls. Try a small test before using the color in a presentation.

Can leaving a solid blue screen on damage my display?

No. A plain blue screen can't leave a mark, because every dot shows the same blue and nothing stays in one spot. In full screen, even the controls hide. Marks, called burn-in, come from bright shapes left in one place for hours on some OLED screens, like a logo or a taskbar, as Samsung's panel care guide explains. On an OLED screen, turn Lines and split off for long sessions.

Does a blue screen use more phone battery than a black screen?

Battery use depends on screen type and brightness. On OLED phones, black pixels can switch off while blue pixels stay lit. LCD screens use a backlight, which does not switch off just because the image is blue. Purdue University research shows that brightness changes OLED power use the most. Lower your device brightness, or choose black when color is not needed.

Is this blue screen free, and does it record me?

The color display is free to open in your browser, and no account is required. Showing blue does not require camera or microphone access. You only use a camera if you choose to film the screen with another device, or scan the Send to phone QR code. Your footage and photos stay with whatever camera or editing app you decide to use.

Why does the same blue look different on my phone and laptop?

Two devices can receive the same hex code but show different results. Display technology, brightness, viewing angle and color settings all affect the image you see, and night-color features may shift it as well. Open the same Share setup link on both devices, turn off color-changing filters if useful, and compare the screens straight on. If you film with blue, compare the recorded footage rather than the two panels.
