MP4 plays everywhere: YouTube, phones, TVs and every video editor.
Silent sound track
Some players, apps and editors expect a sound track. A silent one keeps the video silent and makes them happy.
Countdown
Adds a 5 … 1 countdown before the video, like a film leader. Handy for cueing a recording or an edit.

Every length from 5 s to 1 h in one ZIP file.
Keep-awake loop
A 1-minute video to play on repeat, so a TV, tablet or phone doesn’t go to sleep. It has a silent sound track and never changes your settings above.
How to use your black screen video
Loop it
- VLC: click the Loop button, or press L.
- Windows Media Player: turn on Repeat.
- QuickTime on a Mac: choose View, then Loop.
- TV or USB player: set Repeat to one file. The Keep-awake loop under More downloads is made for this.
Play it here
- No download needed: this page plays your video. Press Play full screen, double-click the preview, or press F. The screen stays on while it plays; press Esc to leave.
- On a phone: tap Play full screen, then Lock so a stray tap can't stop it. Press and hold the screen to unlock.
- Downloaded it instead? Most players go full screen with a double-click or the F key.
Use in an editor
- Pick the same size and frame rate as your project, so the clip needs no conversion.
- Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut: download MP4. Final Cut Pro, iMovie: MOV.
- Drag it onto the timeline and trim it to the length you need, or add a countdown to cue your cut.
Stream & calls
- OBS Studio: add a Media Source, choose the file and tick Loop.
- Zoom, Teams or Meet: share this browser tab, then press Play full screen. Everyone sees a clean black screen.
- Starting soon or a break: pick a length that covers it, and add a countdown to cue your start.
Slides & TV
- PowerPoint: Insert, Video, This Device. In Playback, set Start to Automatically and tick Loop until Stopped.
- Keynote: drag the MOV onto a slide, then in Format, Movie, set Repeat to Loop.
- TV or projector: connect a laptop and press Play full screen here, or play the file from a USB stick (see Loop it).

How do you make a black screen video?
Choose the size and length, then press Download. The default is pure black, 1080p, ten seconds and 30 fps, so a plain clip is ready without opening an editor.
Four steps
- Under Size, pick Widescreen 16:9, Vertical 9:16 or another shape, then a resolution such as 1080p.
- Under Length, select 5 s, 10 s, 30 s or a longer option, or type an exact time.
- Keep MP4 and 30 fps unless your project asks for something different, and change the audio setting only if your player needs it.
- Press Download. The button names the format, size, frame rate and length you chose, so read it once before saving.
Which browsers
The video is made in your browser, on your device. Chrome, Edge and Firefox make any setup you choose. A browser that cannot make video gets the nearest ready-made file instead, and the page says so: pure black, 1080p, wide or vertical, ten seconds, one minute or one hour. For a fully custom size, length, shade and format, open the page in one of those three browsers.
To watch it here instead, choose Play full screen. On an iPhone or iPad, Save to Photos may appear as well.
What can you use a black screen video for?
A black screen video gives an editor or a player a timed clip, not a still picture. You may need five seconds between scenes, or a long black break during an event.
| Your task | Suggested settings | What to do with the file |
|---|---|---|
| Gap between edited scenes | 5 or 10 seconds, the same frame rate as your project | Drop it on the timeline in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or CapCut (MP4), or Final Cut Pro or iMovie (MOV) |
| Podcast or music with no picture | The length of your audio | Add your recording in an editor |
| Vertical video project | 9:16, 1080 × 1920 | Use it in TikTok, Shorts, Reels or Stories |
| Stream starting or break screen | A length that covers the break, an optional countdown | Add it as a media source in OBS Studio |
| Presentation or event pause | 1080p, set to repeat | Insert it or play it during the break |
| TV or tablet that should stay on | Keep-awake loop | Set the player to repeat one file |
| Long uninterrupted black playback | 8, 10 or 12 hours | Play it in any compatible video player |
For streaming, the guide suggests an OBS Studio Media Source with Loop turned on. For music or a podcast, add the sound later in an editor, because the clip itself is silent. The saved file also works offline in an editor or a USB player. If a project needs one black picture rather than a clip, Black Screen Image makes PNG or JPG files. To look for bright spots on a screen in a dark room, play the video full screen; the full black screen page explains what to look for.
Black screen video sizes: widescreen, vertical, square and more
Match the video's shape to your project, because a wide file may be cropped in a vertical post. There are six shape groups.
| Shape | Example dimensions | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| Widescreen 16:9 | 1920 × 1080 | YouTube, TVs and standard edits |
| Vertical 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | TikTok, Shorts, Reels and Stories |
| Square 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 | Instagram and Facebook feed posts |
| Portrait 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 | Instagram portrait feed posts |
| Cinema 21:9 | 3440 × 1440 | Ultrawide projects |
| Classic 4:3 | 1024 × 768 | Older slides and projectors |
Custom sizes
Widescreen choices run from 480p to 8K, and vertical choices from 720 × 1280 to 2160 × 3840. For a tall post, start with 1080 × 1920, then check your platform's rules. For an unusual size, type the Width and Height: each must be an even number of at least 16 pixels. Use my screen size reads your display's dimensions, not your device's model.
Above 4K
Sizes above 4K become WebM, even if you chose MP4 or MOV, and the tool warns you first. If your editor needs MP4, choose a size at or below 4K.
How long can a black screen video be?
Any length from one second to 12 hours. The quick choices run from 5 s, 10 s and 30 s through 1 min, 5 min, 10 min and 30 min to 1 h, 2 h, 3 h, 8 h, 10 h and 12 h. So a 5 second, 30 second or 10 hour black screen video is one tap. You can also type 7 for seven seconds, 2:13 for two minutes and thirteen seconds, or 1:30:00 for an hour and a half. That saves trimming a longer video to fit.
Black frames compress very well, because almost nothing changes from one frame to the next. A pure black 1080p MP4 at 30 fps is tiny:
| Video length | File size |
|---|---|
| 10 seconds | 14 KB |
| 1 minute | 78 KB |
| 1 hour | 4.7 MB |
Other sizes, frame rates and formats change these numbers. A single file cannot pass 4 GB; if your choice would, the tool asks for a shorter length or a smaller size.
Countdown
For a recording cue, choose No countdown, 5 s countdown or 10 s countdown. The numbers 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 play before the black and add to the file's length. A 30-second black clip with a ten-second countdown makes a 40-second file. Leave it off when the black must start at once.
What frame rate should you choose?
Match the frame rate of your existing project. Frame rate is the number of pictures a video shows each second, written fps. Choosing the exact rate means your editor does not have to convert the clip; if you have no project, keep 30 fps.
Film, PAL and NTSC
The choices are 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94 and 60 fps. The tool labels 24 for cinema, 25 and 50 for PAL, and 29.97 and 59.94 for NTSC. PAL and NTSC are older TV standards whose rates editing apps still use.
Match your timeline
Black looks the same at every rate, but timing matters on a timeline. 29.97 is not the same as 30, and 23.976 is not the same as 24. Select the number your editor shows. YouTube's upload guidance also asks for videos in the same frame rate they were recorded. For a plain black clip, 60 fps is not an improvement.
Which black screen video format should you use, and is it silent?
Choose MP4 unless your app asks for WebM or MOV. Some TVs and editors reject files that work elsewhere, so test a short clip before you make a long one.
| Format | Best starting use | Check before downloading |
|---|---|---|
| MP4 | Phones, YouTube, TVs and editors such as Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and CapCut | The general choice for files up to 4K |
| WebM | Websites and sizes above 4K | Some editors cannot open it |
| MOV | QuickTime, iMovie and Final Cut Pro | Common in Mac editing |
File containers
A video file has a container (MP4, WebM or MOV) and a way of storing the picture inside it, as the MDN guide to media containers explains. That is why an .mp4 name alone cannot promise that every player will open it, so check what your TV or editor accepts.
Silent audio track
Under Audio, choose No audio track or Silent audio track. The silent track carries silence, which helps TVs, phones and apps that will not play a video without sound or let the screen sleep. Neither option adds music or speech. Some browsers cannot put a silent track into WebM; the page then suggests MP4 or MOV.
Black, near black or another color?
Choose Pure black for #000000. For a softer dark color, the tool also offers Rich black, Jet, Ink, Obsidian, Onyx, Charcoal, Gunmetal, Graphite and Slate, which you can compare in the preview.

Eleven other solid colors sit beside them: White, Red, Green, Chroma green, Blue, Light blue, Gray, Orange, Yellow, Purple and Pink. Chroma green is #00B140, the green that video apps remove cleanly, so you get a colored backdrop clip without another program. It does not remove a background or place a person over the clip. The White Screen, Red Screen, Green Screen and Blue Screen pages send you here when you want their color as a video.
Use Copy this color code to reuse a shade elsewhere. Video compression can shift a near-black value by one tiny step, which no eye can see.
Can you play a black screen video full screen without downloading?
Yes. Choose Play full screen to watch it right here. On a computer, double-click the player or press F; on a phone, tap the video twice. Press Esc or Exit to leave. The screen stays on while it plays.
The full-screen bar
The full-screen bar has the color dots, Off for a clean view and Clock for the time. On a touch screen, Lock stops a stray tap from interrupting playback; press and hold to unlock. These controls appear only on the page, never in the saved video.
On a phone
On a phone, or above 4K, the player may use a 360p preview copy so it plays smoothly; the download is always your full size. A downloaded clip is the better choice when you need offline playback or a fixed length.
Plays your video right here. Press Esc to leave.
How do you loop a black screen video on a TV or during slides?
Looping restarts a video when it ends, so a short clip can cover a long event. Turn on repeat in your player, and test it before the audience arrives.
Players and TVs
The How to use it guide shows Loop in VLC, Repeat in Windows Media Player and View → Loop in QuickTime. A TV or USB player may call it Repeat one. If you added a countdown, it plays on every repeat, so leave it off for steady black between loops.
Slides
For PowerPoint, insert the clip, open Playback, set Start to Automatically, then select Loop until Stopped. In Keynote, add the movie and set it to repeat.
Keep-awake loop
The Keep-awake loop is a separate one-minute MP4 with a silent audio track. It is made to play on repeat on a phone, tablet or TV, without changing your settings. The file is about 54 KB. It helps keep a player active, although a device's own power settings can still apply.
Black screen video file or a 10-hour YouTube video?
The short answer
A 10-hour black screen video on YouTube is fine if you only want to play black. It streams for free and needs no download. A file is better when you need control. It plays offline with no ads or pauses, at your exact length, size, shape and color, and it goes straight into an editor, onto a USB stick or into a slide.
Where a file wins
A YouTube video also cannot be dropped onto an editing timeline, and it can stop when your internet drops. So use YouTube to fill a screen for an evening. Use a downloaded black screen video when the clip has to fit a project, a TV without internet or an event that must not pause.
Download several videos or send the setup to your phone
Many videos in one ZIP
Use Many videos in one ZIP for several clips at once. Choose Every length, 5 s to 1 h for eight 1080p MP4 files, or Every shape, same length for different layouts. Use Download for a single video.
Send or share
Send to phone shows a QR code on a computer; scan it to open the same setup on your phone, ready to download. Share setup copies a link with the size, color, length, frame rate, format, sound and countdown, to send to anyone. Neither one sends the file itself.
On an iPhone or iPad, Save to Photos may appear. Otherwise, look in the Files app under Downloads, as Apple explains. Saving works a little differently in each phone browser, so check that the saved file has the length you chose.
Is YouTube showing you a black screen instead?
If YouTube or another app shows a black screen while a video should play, that is a playback problem, not a black screen video. Black Screen Online makes black video files on purpose. Restart the app or reload the page first; if the picture stays black, check the app's own help. If you want to hear a video's sound with your phone screen off, that is a phone setting or an app feature, not a video file.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a black screen video on a monetized channel or in client work?
Yes. Black Screen Online's Terms of Use let you use the videos you make here in personal and commercial projects, with no credit needed. You can place a black clip in a paid editing project or on a monetized channel. The picture has no watermark, although the file's information tag names the site. Music, logos or footage you add later may have separate rights, so check them before publishing.
Why does pure black look gray on my TV?
A video can hold perfectly black frames while your TV shows dark gray. Most LCD TVs light the picture from behind, and their picture settings and room reflections change how black looks. OLED screens light each pixel on its own, so their black is deeper. RTINGS explains black uniformity. The file's color is exact; the TV decides how it looks.
Can I upload the video to YouTube or use it in a vertical post?
Yes, if the final file meets the platform's requirements. YouTube recommends MP4 for uploads, so MP4 at your project's frame rate is the safe choice. Choose Vertical 9:16 for a tall post on TikTok, Shorts or Reels. Add any music, narration or captions in your editor first, because this page makes the video file but does not upload it for you.
How do I save a black screen video on an iPhone?
If Save to Photos appears, tap it and follow your phone's steps, and the video lands in Photos. If you used Download, look in the Files app under Downloads, where you can open or share it. Saving works a little differently in each phone browser, so check that the saved file has the length and format you chose before you use it.
Will a black video save battery or keep my device awake?
On an OLED screen, black pixels use less power than bright ones, but playing any video also uses the processor. Purdue University's research found that dark screens save more at high brightness and only a little at normal brightness. A repeating video, like the Keep-awake loop, can keep a screen active, but your device's power settings still decide in the end.
