Use your screen as a green screen
Set up
- Put the screen behind your subject and pick Chroma key. The screen turns green and stays on.
- Turn your device brightness all the way up. Switch off night mode, True Tone or any blue light filter, because they tint the green.
- Keep your subject about 3 feet in front of the screen, so its green light does not land on them.
- Light your subject from the front, a little brighter than the screen. Frame the shot so the screen fills everything behind them.
Camera
- Lock focus and exposure on your subject. On most phones: press and hold on the subject until the camera says it is locked.
- Turn off HDR, beauty and portrait effects. They change colors and edges, so the green comes off less cleanly.
- Stripes or bands on the screen? Move the camera a little or change the distance. On a camera with manual settings, set the shutter to 1/60.
- Film a few seconds and try the key in your app before you record the whole thing.
Key it out
- OBS Studio: right-click your camera source › Filters › the + under Effect Filters › Chroma Key. Pick Green, or Custom and sample the green.
- Zoom: Settings › Video & effects › Virtual backgrounds › tick I have a green screen, then click the green in your preview.
- CapCut: select the clip › Video › Remove BG › Chroma key › Color picker, click the green, then raise Strength until it is gone.
- Premiere Pro: drag Ultra Key from the Effects panel onto the clip, then click the green in the Program Monitor with the Key Color eyedropper.
- DaVinci Resolve: on the Edit page, drag 3D Keyer from Effects onto the clip and sample the green in the viewer. The Qualifier on the Color page gives finer control.
- iMovie on a Mac: put your clip above the background clip, click Video Overlay Settings above the viewer, then choose Green/Blue Screen.
When it fails
- Green edges on hair or shoulders: move your subject further from the screen, or dim the screen a little.
- Holes in your subject: something on them is green. Switch to Wearing green? (Chroma blue).
- Patchy green? Turn your device brightness up. Keep the whole screen in the shot, lit evenly with no glare.
- Too small for what you film? A screen works behind hands, products and close-ups. For a whole person, use a real backdrop.

What can you use a green screen for? Five setups
A green screen works as a video backdrop, a product backdrop, a colored light and a check for broken dots. I chose five setups because these jobs call for different settings. Setups for: Computer / Phone or tablet shows the choices for your device, and you can change the view. Each card has a ? tip and displays Changed after edits.
| Setup | Device | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Chroma key | Computer, phone, tablet | #00B140 for a video background you plan to replace |
| Product backdrop | Phone, tablet | Chroma green behind a small item, with taps locked |
| Green light | Computer, phone, tablet | Pure green #00FF00 for a colored glow or signal |
| Wearing green? | Computer, phone, tablet | Chroma blue #0047BB for subjects that contain green |
| Check green pixels | Computer | Pure green with thin lines to spot dark points |
Chroma key
Computer, phone, tabletBest for: a video background you will replace
Chroma key for short videos
Choose Chroma key behind a hand, toy, or close-up face. Record using another camera, then replace the green in your editor. For a tight shot, check that the screen covers the entire area behind the object. If its borders appear in the recording, move the camera closer or change the framing.
Product backdrop
Phone or tabletBest for: a small item in front of a phone
Product backdrop for a phone or tablet
The Product backdrop setup keeps chroma green on screen and locks ordinary taps, so touching the phone while you arrange a small object does not change the background. Glass, metal, and glossy packaging may still reflect green, so check them in the camera preview.
Green light
Computer, phone, tabletBest for: a green glow or signal
Green light for a photo or signal
Green light uses #00FF00, with its green channel at 255: the brightest green your screen can make. It adds a nearby glow for a photo, a party or a visual signal. The glow looks stronger in a dark room than in daylight, so test it where you will shoot. Green also looks very bright to your eyes, so a full green screen shows any patchy light on your display clearly.
Check green pixels
ComputerBest for: finding a broken dot
Check green pixels on a monitor
Check green pixels adds thin lines over pure green. On pure green, only the green part of each dot lights up, so a broken one shows as a dark dot that would hide on a white screen. Wipe off dust before checking, then compare the same area on a red screen and a blue screen.
A broken dot on green
Chroma green #00B140. It stays on.
Which green screen color code works best?
The usual chroma key green is #00B140, or RGB (0, 177, 64). It is the green screen color that StudioBinder's color guide lists, and the default here. A video editor samples the color your camera records, so a steady background and clear subject edges matter more than an exact code. The brighter-looking pure green #00FF00 may throw stronger reflections onto some surfaces. Test both if you are unsure.
Open Open settings and choose Light to see the shade options. You can adjust the brightness there too.

Custom lets you pick any other color, and Copy this color code copies its hex value. The same code can look a little different on another screen and in another camera, so record a short test clip before you decide a shade works.
How do you light a green screen?
A screen backdrop makes its own light, so it needs none of the backdrop lights a fabric screen does. Your job is to light your subject and keep green light off them. A glowing screen can shine green onto whatever stands in front of it. Film with a separate camera, and open Set up your green screen for the Set up and Camera guides.
Frame the shot. Set the display behind your subject and choose Chroma key. Make sure green covers the part of the frame you want to replace. Keep the screen edges outside that area.
Check screen brightness. Start with a clear, steady green. Increase your device brightness if the color looks too dim. Turn off Night light, Night Shift, True Tone, or similar settings if they shift its color.
Leave some space. If the screen is large enough, try about 3 feet between it and your subject. This is a starting suggestion, not a technical standard. Look for reflected green on the subject.
Light the subject from the front. Use a separate light if possible. Aim for a clear face or object without strong green reflections. Do not rely on the screen to light both the background and the subject.
Set your camera. Lock focus and exposure when possible. Turn off portrait, beauty, or HDR effects if they change outlines and colors while filming.
Record a sample. Film a few seconds and test green removal before the full take. Check hair, fingers, reflections, and frame edges.
Adobe's green screen guide supports separate lighting and greater subject distance to reduce green spill. Its studio spacing guidance is much larger than three feet. For a whole person or a moving subject, a fabric backdrop is usually more practical.
Set up, camera, your app, and quick fixes, in four tabs.
How do you remove a green screen in your video app?
Chroma key makes a selected color see-through in recorded video, so another image or clip shows behind your subject. Your video app does the removal, and this page gives it a clean green to remove. The table shows where the setting is in six common apps.
| App | Green screen setting |
|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Right-click camera source → Filters → + under Effect Filters → Chroma Key |
| Zoom desktop | Settings → Video & effects → Virtual backgrounds → I have a green screen |
| CapCut desktop | Select clip → Video → Remove BG → Chroma key → color picker |
| Premiere Pro | Effects → Video Effects → Keying → Ultra Key, then sample Key Color in Effect Controls |
| DaVinci Resolve | Edit page → Effects Library → 3D Keyer → choose a green sample in the Inspector |
| iMovie on Mac | Place green clip above background → Video Overlay Settings → Green/Blue Screen |
The makers explain each step for OBS, Zoom, CapCut, Premiere Pro and iMovie. Some menu names change with software updates. Sample green from your recording, then check the result while the subject moves.
Wearing green? Switch to a blue screen
If someone wears green clothing, chroma key may erase parts of that clothing. A green plant or toy can cause the same problem. Select Wearing green? to switch the tool to Chroma blue #0047BB, give your subject a little more light, then sample blue in your editor instead.
#0047BB
Chroma blue, for subjects with green
Blue is not always better: a blue shirt or blue object can disappear against a blue backdrop. Apple's iMovie instructions recommend the opposite color, blue when your subject contains green and green when it contains blue. For more blues and the full blue screen vs green screen comparison, open Blue Screen.
Chroma blue #0047BB. Give your subject a little more light.
Why does a green screen leave green edges or stripes?
A green screen may look fine while filming, then leave green edges after editing. Check the original recording first: reflections, shifting exposure and camera timing show up there, and the color picker alone cannot remove them.
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| Green around hair or fingers | Move the subject farther away or lower screen brightness |
| A shirt or object disappears | Look for green in the subject; try the blue setup |
| Parts of the green remain | Check glare, exposure changes, and whether the screen fills the background |
| Dark bands move across the image | Change the camera angle, distance, or shutter speed |
| The screen is too small | Move in for a closer shot or use a larger fabric backdrop |
Bands can appear when the camera and display refresh at different rates. On a camera with manual controls, 1/60 second is one shutter speed to test. Sony's flicker guidance explains how changing the shutter speed can reduce bands from flickering light. Lock exposure when possible, and change one setting at a time.

Download a green screen background, image or video
Choose Download an image or the Download tab when you need a file instead of a live display. Select PNG, JPG, or WebP. Downloads use the chosen color at full strength, even if you dimmed the preview, and PNG keeps exact color values.
| Image size | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 1280 × 720 HD | Small video frames |
| 1920 × 1080 Full HD | Standard monitors and videos |
| 2560 × 1440 2K | Larger displays |
| 3840 × 2160 4K | High-resolution projects |
| 1080 × 1920 Phone | Vertical mobile backgrounds |
Opens the Download tab in the tool above.
Size and format
For another size, enter your own Width and Height, up to 7680 pixels on each side. Use the image as a green screen background, a wallpaper, a slide background, or a video layer.
Every download:
- Full-strength color
- Your chosen shade
- Up to 7680 pixels on each side
Green screen video
For Chroma green and Pure green, Download as a video opens Black Screen Video with that color chosen, ready to save as an MP4 or WebM file. You do not need a 10-hour green screen video either: the live green stays on as long as you like with Keep screen on.
Second monitor, sharing, timer, and display controls
Second monitor
Under Second monitor, use Choose a monitor where supported. Otherwise, Open a new window, drag it to another display, and press F11. Your main screen stays free.
Share and phone
Share setup copies a link with your settings. Send to phone makes a QR code that opens the same shade, brightness, and size on a phone. This is handy when you prepare a shade on your computer but want to use a tablet for the shot.
Timer and screen on
Under Timer and effects, Turn off after offers 1, 5, 15, or 30 minutes, plus 1, 2, 4, or 8 hours. Keep screen on stops the screen from going to sleep while the green screen is open.
Lines, split and flash
Lines and split offers Thin, Medium, or Wide lines, plus side-by-side or top-and-bottom half-black views. These overlays do not appear in downloads.
Flash and pulse includes Steady, Pulse, and Flash at 1, 2, or 3 flashes per second. Flash asks for confirmation and runs only in full screen. Even within those limits, flashing can affect sensitive viewers, so choose Steady unless you need the effect.
The W3C flashing criteria describe accessibility limits, not a personal safety guarantee. Press Esc to stop.
Fills your other screen with green.
Why did my phone or computer screen turn green?
A screen that turns green by itself has a fault or a setting switched on. It is a different thing from the green screen on this page.
Green line on a phone
A green line on a phone is most often a hardware fault in the display or the connector behind it, as LaptopMag explains. Restart the phone to rule out software, then contact the maker's support for a repair.
Green screen of death
The green screen of death is the Windows crash screen on Insider Preview builds. It shows the same error as the blue screen of death, in green, as How-To Geek explains. Write down the stop code and follow Microsoft's stop-code steps, as for a blue screen crash.
PS5 or TV
A PS5 or TV that turns green usually has a picture-signal problem. iFixit's guide suggests checking the input and trying another HDMI cable or port. Turning off HDR on the TV helps some owners.
iPhone tint
An iPhone that looks green all over may have a color filter switched on. Check Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size › Color Filters, as Apple's display guide shows.
Other color screens
A white screen is useful for tracing, lighting, and white display checks. A black screen gives you a dark display for a pause. The red screen gives a dim night light, and the blue screen gives more backdrop blues.
Gives a bright, warm or cool white for tracing or video calls.
Gives a dim red light for the night, from pure red to night red.
Offers six blues for a backdrop or a soft light, or any blue you choose.
Bright white for light and tracing.
Pure black for a dark room.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a TV as a green screen?
Yes, if the TV browser can open the page or a connected computer can display it. The larger panel gives more space behind a subject, but reflections and picture settings may change the recorded green. Hide menus and check for visible borders. Test a short clip before filming. A television may still be too small for a person moving across the frame.
How does a green screen work?
A green screen is a solid green background that your video app can remove and replace. The app makes every pixel of that green see-through, a step called chroma key, and shows another picture or video in its place. Green is used because it sits far from skin and hair colors, and most camera sensors record green in the most detail. A screen running this tool does the same job as a green cloth, for a close-up or a small object.
Do I need a physical green screen for Zoom backgrounds?
No. Compatible devices can use Zoom virtual backgrounds without green. Zoom's guidance says a green backdrop gives the best result and uses fewer system resources. A tablet or monitor must cover everything visible behind you, and you should not wear the same color as the backdrop. For a wider frame, use a larger backdrop or Zoom's option without a green screen.
Does the green screen tool use my camera or microphone?
No. Showing a solid color needs no camera or microphone access, and the page never films you. Record with another device or the app of your choice. Scanning the Send to phone QR code only opens the same screen settings on your phone. It does not start a call or connect any camera, and your recordings stay in the app you film with.
Why does the same green look different on two devices?
Each display has its own brightness, panel, color settings, and viewing angle, so the same hex code may look lighter or darker on another screen. Night settings can shift the color too. Open the shared setup on both devices and turn off color filters when practical. For chroma key, judge the green in your recorded video, not only by comparing the screens side by side.
Can I use this tool for green screen photography?
Yes. Put a small item in front of the display and take a photograph with another camera. You can then select the green background in photo-editing software and replace it. Smooth, matte objects are usually easier to separate than reflective items or fine transparent edges. If you only need a plain green picture, use Download an image instead of photographing the screen.
