Overview

A free black screen image in any size or format

A black screen image is a picture file filled with solid black, usually #000000. The black screen image tool on Black Screen Online is a free tool that makes one at any size, from one pixel to 8K. Pick a size and a format (PNG, JPG, WebP, SVG or ICO), press Download, and insert it anywhere, with no sign-up. Need the whole screen black instead of a file? Use the black screen.

The basics

What is a black screen image?

A black screen image is a real picture file, not a photo of a dark screen. Every pixel is black, usually #000000 (RGB 0, 0, 0), so it inserts cleanly into any app that takes pictures. A screenshot of a black screen is different: it can catch toolbars, a mouse pointer or the wrong size. Here you choose the exact width, height and format before you save, so the file is right the first time.

A file, not a screenshot

Getting started

How do you download a black screen image?

Choose a size and a format, then press Download. The preview starts with Pure black, and if your app does not ask for a format, PNG is the safe first choice.

Four steps

  1. Under Size, choose 1080p, 4K, Phone or another size. Use Match my screen when the file needs your display's own size.
  2. Leave Pure black selected, or change Shade for a different dark color.
  3. Under Format & size, choose PNG for an ordinary picture, or the format your app asks for.
  4. Press Download. The button shows the size and format, and Copy image pastes the PNG straight into a document or slide instead.

More ways to get it

Copy image sits beside Download because many people need to paste a picture, not manage another file. For several sizes at once, Download all sizes puts the whole group in one ZIP file.

Want a file without changing any settings? Black Screen Online's ready-made gallery offers 17 black screen images in screen, square, phone, ultrawide and icon sizes. Most are Pure black #000000, and one is Onyx #121212, a softer near black. Some cards offer AVIF, a format only the gallery has. Choosing Open in the tool on an AVIF card switches to WebP, so use Download if you need AVIF. Check the dimensions on each card, so you do not pick a wide image for a square post.

Uses

What can you use a black screen image for?

Use a black screen image whenever a program asks for a picture. These examples start with the place the file will go, so you can choose without knowing image terms first.

Your taskSize or control to useResult
Presentation or class slide1080p or Copy imageA file to insert or paste

Check your app for its required size, format and file-size limit before you upload. Some jobs have their own tool. For a black clip that plays for minutes or hours, use Black Screen Video. For a phone lock screen sized to your exact model, use Black Wallpaper. For a background sized for Zoom, slides or YouTube, with a style or text, use Black Background.

Sizes

Black screen image sizes, from one pixel to 8K

Image size means width and height in pixels, the small dots that form a picture. When an upload asks for exact numbers, entering those numbers is safer than guessing.

Size groupChoices
Your screenMatch my screen
Icons16, 32, 48, 180, 192 and 512 pixels square
Small1 × 1, 64 × 64, 100 × 100, 300 × 300, 500 × 500
Square1000 × 1000, 1080 × 1080, 2048 × 2048
Screen720p, 1080p, 1440p, 4K, 8K, Ultrawide
Phone1080 × 1920, portrait

1080p measures 1920 × 1080, 4K is 3840 × 2160, and 8K is 7680 × 4320. For sizes that are not in the list, type your own Width and Height, from 1 to 7,680 pixels on each side. Equal sides make a square, and a larger height makes a portrait. The first number is always the width, and more pixels will not make the black any darker.

A plain 8K PNG is only 4.0 KB, because plain black files are written directly rather than drawn. Even an 8K image downloads in a moment on a phone. JPG goes up to 4K; for an 8K file, choose PNG, WebP or SVG.

Formats

Black PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG: which format should you download?

Not sure which format to pick? Start with PNG. PNG keeps every pixel exact and opens in almost every app. JPG can change pixels slightly, and WebP makes very small files. SVG scales to any size, and ICO is for website icons (MDN's guide to image formats explains each one). If an app rejects your file, check which formats it accepts, because renaming a file from .jpg to .png does not convert the picture. Choose the right type under Format & size and download again, with the same size and shade.

Good to know

At 4K, a plain PNG is 1.1 KB and a JPG is 48 KB, so a flat-color JPG is not always the smaller file. A black PNG here is solid and opaque, not a transparent logo or cutout. SVG needs Solid with no photo, and AVIF comes from the gallery, not the format menu.

How these were measured

Sizes as the tool measures them for plain black; a style or a photo makes a file larger.

Pure black

Is a black screen image really pure black?

Every pixel is #000000

Yes. A Pure black PNG uses #000000, with red, green and blue all at zero. It is fully opaque, and every gallery file was checked pixel by pixel to be pure black. JPG can shift the values slightly because of its compression, so choose PNG when the exact value matters.

Check it yourself

To check a downloaded file yourself, sample it with any color picker; the tool's Custom picker can also read a color from anywhere on screen. On most computer screens, a light behind the picture stays on. So a pure black file can look dark gray on your display while the file itself is still #000000.

Ten blacks

Pure black or near black: which shade should you pick?

Choose Pure black when a project asks for exact black. The nearby dark shades are there because pure black can look too sharp beside a softer dark interface, so compare them in the preview.

Choose Custom for any other value, then Copy this color code to match it elsewhere. The shade you pick is saved in the image, its file name and its code.

Copy and link

Copy the image, a black image URL or its code

Choose how to use the image by what your app needs. Each control does a different job.

What you needChooseWhat you get
A picture file to save or uploadDownloadA file in your selected format
A picture to paste into a slideCopy imageA PNG on your clipboard, if your browser allows it
A web address for a gallery fileImage linkA black image URL that points to a hosted file
A way to repeat your choicesShare setupA link to the tool with your size, shade, style and format
Image data or a rule for a websiteCopy as codeCSS, SVG data URI or PNG Base64

Image link works when your size and shade match a gallery file, because only those files are hosted. CSS is a color rule, while an SVG data URI and PNG Base64 store the image itself as text you can paste into code. If copying fails, download the image instead.

Icons

Make a black favicon or app icon

Icon sizes

A favicon is the small icon beside a website's name in a browser tab. Choose Icons for 16, 32, 48, 180, 192 or 512 pixels square. ICO works for square files up to 256 × 256.

Icons ZIP and sources

Icon sizes are grouped because making each one by hand takes time. Download all sizes in the Icons group gives you the PNGs plus a favicon.ico that holds the 16, 32 and 48 pixel images in one file. Apple's Safari guide shows a 180 × 180 touch icon, and the web.dev manifest guide covers 192 and 512 pixel web-app icons. A solid black icon can disappear on a dark browser tab, so for your final site icon, add a visible mark.

Styles and photo

Add a style or your own photo

Styles

The tool starts with Solid, a plain black file. For texture, open More options: styles and photo and choose Vignette, Gradient, Grain, Spotlight, Dots, Grid or Carbon fiber, then adjust the strength, direction, position or opacity. Effects make files larger, so watch the size readout: a 1080p Gradient PNG is about 198 KB.

Your photo

Choose Your photo to place your own picture over black. Fit keeps all of it visible, Fill may crop its edges, Padding adds space, and Shadow defines its outline. Your photo never leaves your device: it is placed in your browser and never uploaded. Use Remove photo to clear it.

Full screen

Can you open a black screen image full screen?

Yes. Choose Open full screen, press F, or double-click the preview; on a phone, double-tap. The bar has the shade dots, Pick any color and Exit, and Esc leaves. Full screen lets you check the black at full size before you save, without changing the downloaded size. For a black display with more settings, such as brightness and a timer, use the full black screen.

Troubleshooting

Why did my screen go black?

If your laptop, monitor or phone went black on its own, that is a different problem from a black image file. On a Windows PC or a Mac, check that the screen has power and the cable is firm, then restart. On an iPhone or Android phone, hold the power button to restart it. If the screen stays on a blank black screen, Black Screen Online explains what to do when a screen goes black on its own, or follow the device maker's support.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I use these black screen images in a business project?

Yes. Black Screen Online's Terms of Use let you use the files you make here, and the gallery files, in personal or commercial projects. That includes presentations and websites, with no credit needed and no account. If you add a photo, logo or other artwork, make sure you have permission to use it, because the terms cover only what the tool makes.

Can I download a black image on an iPhone or Android phone?

Yes. Press Download in your phone's browser. On Android, look in your Downloads folder if the file is not in Gallery. On iPhone, open the Files app and look under Downloads; Apple explains how to find saved downloads. From there you can open or share the image. Menu names can differ between phones and browsers. If the file is hard to find, download it again and watch for the browser's download message.

What is a 1 × 1 black pixel useful for?

A 1 × 1 image holds a single pixel. Website builders use one as a tiny placeholder or a test file, not as a slide. Some upload forms reject images that small, so check the minimum size first. The Small group lets you pick it without typing the numbers. Larger squares, from 64 × 64 to 500 × 500, sit in the same group for slightly bigger placeholders.

Will my downloaded black image work without internet access?

Yes. Once downloaded, the file stays on your device and works offline in any software that opens its format. PNG and JPG open almost everywhere, while SVG and ICO may need a compatible app. An Image link still needs the internet, so save the file itself if you will be offline. Saved files keep their size and color, so they look the same every time.

Can I change the size after downloading?

Yes, but a new download is cleaner. Many editors can resize a picture, though they may crop it or change its shape. For an exact result, type a new Width and Height in the tool and download again. A plain SVG scales smoothly because it describes shapes rather than fixed pixels, if your app accepts SVG. Share setup saves your choices as a link, so you can come back and make the next size quickly.

Need it as a file?
